Brisbane 1980’s houses – why they are back in trend

Brisbane’s architecture has done a full 360° over the past 100 years. It used to be timber and tin cottages, which transitioned to Victorian-era Queenslanders, to the brick of the 1970’s, now to the modern masterpieces of today.

The 1982 Commonwealth Games and Expo 88 provided a forefront for Brisbane to embrace change, but nothing too dramatic in nature.

Construction of brick and tile houses was moving apace, while unit blocks started to take shape.

Design was relatively simple – a three-bedroom, one-bathroom layout typically speaking. This style was conservative and plain.

The 1980’s delivered aluminium sliding doors, laminate flooring and bench tops, and kidney-shaped pools as people embraced outdoor living.

Suburbs in the Redlands came of age during this period, Alexandra Hills most notably.

Today, many families and first-home buyers flock to Alex Hills (as the locals call it) due to affordability and the plethora of 1980’s houses that provide the perfect blueprint for renovating.

Our Johnson Real Estate Redlands office sold this property at 7 Wimborne Road, Alexandra Hills late last year. This three-bedroom, one-bathroom property with a rather dated-interior boasts the opportunity as a renovators delight.
