Bamboo furniture making a comeback
Retro bamboo furniture and homewares is making a big comeback. As one of the most environmentally-friendly resources, redecorating with bamboo is pretty much a win-win.
From homewares to flooring and fabrics, there really isn’t much you can’t do with bamboo.
Chairs, couches, bedframes, lampshades, mirrors and baskets are some of the more popular bamboo pieces making a resurgence.
Besides being very on trend, the best thing about bamboo is that it is a renewable resource. Bamboo is not a tree – it’s grass and grows very fast, so it can renew itself unlike hardwood trees. Although its delicate nature, bamboo is very strong and durable. In fact, it is one of the hardest woods. It’s also resistant to insects and moistures.
Bamboo has a long list of eco-friendly credentials: it’s self-generating and fast-growing, requires little water and no pesticides or fertilisers, reduces carbon dioxide, it’s even edible and as a fabric it’s absorbent and soft.
The woven techniques of bamboo add texture and richness, while also complementing a space with subtle edge. Combined with neutrals and indoor plants, the combination makes for a timeless space. Woven pieces are often thought of as ‘boho style’ but really, it’s just relaxed with a touch of modern.
Maintaining bamboo is pretty simple. However, there are a few things to keep in mind. In the case of outdoor furniture, keep water exposure to a minimum. For indoor furniture and other features, oiling every one to two months to prevent cracks and maintain sheen is recommended. To clean bamboo products, using a soft cloth with mild soapy water is adequate.
If you're not sure what to use in your next creative decorating venture, consider bamboo.
