What is your property personality?
According to psychologist Meredith Fuller, our personalities have a profound influence on our choice of home.
Fuller explains that buyers fall into two basic types. The first is the more intuitive, feeling type. These people will walk into a home and know whether it’s right. They’ll know whether it’s right based on a feeling of familiarity – that is, a place where they can be their true self and feel at ease.
Intuitive people tend to make more emotional purchases, based on their sense of resonating with a home and imagining themselves in it.
Fuller says the opposite to that are “very logical and matter of fact” home buyers. For them, a house is a house, not a home. These people choose the house that best fits their requirements. They’ll check their list off to determine whether a house has met enough of their needs. People like this often are detailed-oriented.
Fuller says that thinking about what a home means will provide further insight into choices. Open-plan houses may suit someone who loves being surrounded by family, while others want privacy.
Part of the role personality plays in your choices goes back to childhood, explains Fuller. People will choose something that reminds them of their childhood or do the reverse. If someone grew up in a cluttered environment, they may gravitate towards a more spacious, minimalistic house.
Ultimately, “a house is a representation of who you are as a person”.
